The Valmalle Gite
Elisabeth Meric
Gite for rent, weekends or by the week Located beside the D 984 road 2.5 km from St Germain de Calberte on the way to St André de Lancize (3 km). 500 meters height.
Description:
The living-room opens into a corridor leading to the bathroom with bath, washbasin and bidet, a separate W.C., a linen cupboard, a large fridge with freezer compartment, and a storage area for the garden furniture.
SituationThe gite is located on the Grisou hiker's trail that winds its way round the top of the Calberte valley, not far from the Languedoc draille (an ancient route for the transhumance of sheep), the GR7 and GR67 national long-distance footpaths and the Stevenson trail. Just a few strides away are wild mountain streams with pools for a refreshing dip in summer, miniature canyons with sparkling hoarfrost and flowering strawberry trees in winter and heather in the spring. A short climb above the house rewards you with breathtaking views of Le Cam, Mont Mars and Mont Aigoual, and from a little further up you will see, towards the north behind the Ventalon, the rounded summits of Finiels on Mont Lozère . On a clear day you can see, far away to the east, the Mont Ventoux in Provence and the Oisans chain of the Alps. The gite makes a convenient headquarters for car trips to explore the Ventalon and Mont Lozère, the town of Florac, the Tarn Gorge and the Grandes Causses and, to the south, St Jean du Gard, Anduze with its bamboo forest, and a number of spectacular caves.
How to get thereFrom Paris or Clermont-Ferrand : Leave the A75 motorway at Marvejols, and head towards Mende, then Florac. After Florac continue about 20 km along the road to Alès until you get to the Col de Jalcreste.
